In the fight against established breast cancer, Dr. Asea has developed a drug named NampEVA, which has been shown to stop the growth and spread of breast tumors in laboratory animals and to greatly increase the ability of white blood cells to recognize and kill breast tumors. Dr. Asea is looking for funds which will allow him to initiate Phase I clinical trials in women with breast cancer at Scott & White Hospital. NampEVA uses RNA interference (RNAi) technology to specifically stop the expression of disease causing proteins in breast cancer tumors. RNAi technology is a new technology which was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology.

In addition, Dr. Asea is collaborating with investigators at MD Anderson to combine this drug with nanotechnology and radiotherapy in the fight against a specific breast cancer type, known as triple negative breast cancer. The disease gets its name because of negative testing for estrogen and progesterone receptors and negative testing for HER2 gene overexpression. Without these receptors triple negative breast cancer resists common therapies used against other breast cancers.

In the development of an effective vaccine against breast cancer before it grows, Dr. Asea has developed a vaccine by fusing together heat shock proteins (HSP) with antigenic peptides relevant to breast cancer including MUC-1 and HER2. The vaccine, named AKERA-845, has shown good efficacy in laboratory animal tests. Dr. Asea is looking for funds to complete essential pharmacological and toxicological tests to determine the effectiveness of this vaccine in laboratory animals.
